During the summer of 2007, prior to beginning my first year of medical school at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, I biked the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route – the longest off road bike path in the world. The path stretches approximately 2,400 miles from Canada to Mexico. The purpose of the trip was to raise money and awareness of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. It was a fundraiser that I deeply believed in since it is both a disease that affects my family and is my top interest and reason for pursuing a career in medicine. I was officially endorsed by the Alzheimer's Association and was officially sponsored by LifeMatters. We have raised over $10,000 for the Alzheimer's Association Research Fund. For those who still want to contribute there is still time! The Alzheimer's Association is keeping the fund for the Great Divide Mountain Bike Ride for Alzheimer's open for a few months past my return home. Please help to CONTRIBUTE in raising money and awareness: Tax-Deductible Donation. EIN# 13-3039601.
Who is the money being raised for?
I am raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association. I am doing this in order to securely and efficiently channel the money into this cause. As described on their web-site, the "Alzheimer’s Association, the world leader in Alzheimer research and support, is the first and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to finding prevention methods, treatments and an eventual cure for Alzheimer’s." To often it is the case that money is raised and put into an organization only to be used for administrative costs, etc. As a result, I have stipulated that money that is being raised will be put into Alzheimer's or other neurodegenerative research. What is the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route? "LONGEST OFF-PAVEMENT BIKE ROUTE IN THE WORLD"
The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route is the premier off-pavement route, crisscrossing the Continental Divide north to south. This route is defined by the word 'remote.' This spectacular trip consists of rugged dirt-roads, single track routes and mountain-passes including over 200,000 feet of elevation gain.(http://www.adv-cycling.org/routes/greatdivide.cfm).
